How I Landed My Dream Job: 3 Unconventional Strategies That Set Me Apart From Other Candidates

Updated: May 5, 2023

I'm excited to share my story with you because I know how challenging it can be to land a dream job. It took me years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance to get to where I am today. But I truly believe that the strategies I used can help anyone who's looking for their dream job. These strategies are not your typical "apply and pray" approach. Instead, they require creativity, research, and a willingness to go above and beyond. So, if you're ready to learn how to stand out from the crowd and land your dream job, keep reading!

Strategy #1: Do Your Research

The first strategy I used was doing my research. I read the job posting carefully and highlighted keywords that were integral to the position. Then, I tailored my resume and cover letter to include my experience according to these key traits, making sure to pass the initial scan of applications.

To gain further insights into the company, I researched the employees on LinkedIn, especially those in the same department and position I was applying for. This gave me an idea of what the position required from an employee's perspective. I even read reviews online about the company, from the work culture to the office location, with an open mind.

During the interview, I incorporated my findings into my answers when asked about my goals for the next five or ten years, and the managers were impressed with my thorough research.

Strategy #2: Gain First-Hand Experience

The second strategy I used was gaining first-hand experience. After passing the initial phone interview, I was notified that there would be a mock call in the last leg of the interview. To prepare, I searched on YouTube for mock calls dealing with irate and angry customers.

But I didn't stop there. I called the exact company I applied to and spoke with someone in the same department and position I was applying for, pretending to be an irate customer, just to get a feel of what I should say in the mock call the next morning.

The managers were blown away by my ability to think outside the box and the senior manager even inquired about my experience dealing with her team. I received helpful pointers from each representative, which not only helped me prepare for the mock call but also gave me a glimpse into the work culture of the company.

Strategy #3: Be Sure of Yourself

The third strategy I used was being sure of myself. Before the interview, I revisited my personal mission and core values, which I had written out in college. Personal development has always been a priority for me, and I knew that this habit would come in handy when answering the question, "Why do you want to work for this company?"

Thanks to my research from earlier, I knew the company's mission and values like the back of my hand. So, I was able to effortlessly highlight all the ways the company values aligned with my personal and professional values, which showed confidence in myself and confidence in my ability to contribute to the company vision.

Wrap Up!

It's important to remember that landing your dream job is not just about getting a paycheck, it's about finding a career that aligns with your values, interests, and aspirations. By using these strategies, not only did I land my dream job, but I also gained a deeper understanding of the company culture and how I can contribute to the vision of the organization. So, if you're feeling stuck in your job search or unsure of where to start, remember that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible. Keep pushing forward, stay motivated, and believe in yourself. The right job is out there waiting for you!
