The abuser may resort to name-calling, character assassination, yelling, public embarrassment, dismissiveness, belittling, gaslighting, or pushing your buttons to intimidate and scare you. But what does emotional abuse sound like?
Let me tell you, emotional abuse is a vicious cycle of toxic behavior. The damage it leaves behind can be challenging to manage, especially post-breakup. However, it's essential to unpack with a therapist or a support system to start your journey of self-love and healing.
Here are some tools from my toolbox that helped me stay grounded and committed to my healing and self-love journey.
Taking Your Time
Time is the most valuable currency, and emotional abusers often use it as a tool to control you. Take your time back and reclaim your life. Create a routine that aligns with your authentic self. Spend time with those who uplift you and support your growth. Healing takes time, so be patient with yourself and work at your own pace.
Practicing Self-Compassion and Forgiveness
You did not deserve what happened to you, and you are not responsible for someone else's behavior or emotions. Be kind and compassionate to yourself, and forgive yourself for any perceived mistakes. You did your best, and that's all that matters. Take a journal and reflect on your experiences, emotions, and thoughts. You'll be surprised how much you learn about yourself and your healing process.
Owning Your Narrative
Emotional abuse can create a false narrative of who you are and what you're capable of achieving. Reclaim your story and incorporate healing, playfulness, adventure, and all the things that bring you joy. Don't let the abuser define your life. You are in control of your destiny, and you have the power to create a new reality for yourself.
